The Firm continued to break new ground by successfully obtaining the first successful EAT judgment on an employer’s failure to inform and consult in accordance with the Information and Consultation of Employee Regulations 2004. The Firm’s team of specialist employment lawyers also succeeded in securing a judgment for Unite on granting paid leave for offshore workers which will benefit up to 25,000 workers. In the field of personal injury, the Firm succeeded in recovering compensation of over £36million for union members and their families. In February of this year, on behalf of Unite, the Firm’s specialist personal injury lawyers secured a landmark ruling by the House of Lords regarding employers’ liability in suicide cases by ruling that the widow of a member who killed himself six years after an industrial accident should be compensated by his former employers. This landmark case demonstrates the advancement in the knowledge and understanding of mental health issues. Keith Roberts Managing Partner of Rowley Ashworth said: “Trades unions continue to set themselves apart from many other organisations by ensuring every union client receives the full compensation to which they are entitled, without any deductions. The articles in this year’s Review once again illustrate the real value of trade union membership and access to the Union’s legal services.” To view the Annual Review online go to the main menu select ‘Publications’ and then ‘Bulletins and Reviews’. -ends- Press enquiries: Stephanie Lennon, Rowley Ashworth Solicitors Direct Dial 0121 212 6812 Editors Notes 1.
